Kindred Essay

Have you ever done something in the past that you regret doing because it affected you later on? In the book Kindred, Octavia Butler tells a story about a woman who unexpectedly time travels to the early 1800's because of the actions she should've done. Octavia Butler's main message in the story is that actions we take, can lead to unexpected events!

An event in the book which was unexpected was when Dana tried killing Rufus, but found out her arm was missing when she got back home. "From the elbow to the ends of the fingers, my left arm had become a part of the wall." (Page 261) Dana's left arm disappeared because she made a mistake trying to kill Rufus. Rufus was attached to Dana's arm while she was time traveling and nothing can come with her from the past to the present.

Another unexpected event in the story was when Dana kept time traveling to the 1800's because of Rufus getting in trouble all the time so Dana prevented him from dying. "But it would be so hard to raise the knife, drive it into the flesh I had saved so many times." (Page 260) Dana regrets saving Rufus every time because if she just let him die, Dana would've never gone back to the 1800's.

An action in the story that was regretful was when Kevin, Dana's husband, traveled up North when he got left behind because he wasn't with Dana while she was time traveling. "Five years is longer than it sounds. So much longer." (Page 193) Kevin was stuck in the 1800's for five years! If he just stayed put where Rufus lived, than he would've got home sooner.

In the book Kindred, the author's main message is that actions we take could lead to regretful events. From this, people should think about their actions before they do them because it might not turn out how they want it to go. Your actions today will affect your tomorrow.

My America

Many cultures
You can speak up

America is beautiful
Major change
Everyone wants to come to US
Revolutionary
Independence
Country of liberties
Amazing

I am...

I am an intelligent athlete
I wonder how I am doing in class
I hear the footsteps of athletes
I see the flames on the heels of my feet
I want to take take the championship home
I am an intelligent athlete

I pretend I'm in the major leagues
I feel like running a road with no end
I touch energy that keeps me going
I worry that someone will surpass me
I am an intelligent athlete

I understand that education makes life easier
I say yes we can!
I dream about being a pro athlete
I try to entertain people
I am an intelligent athlete

I am.

Mask Poem

I wear the mask to hide my shame
Just so people have no one to blame

When I wear the mask
I'm as high as a bird
When I take the task
I'm as low as a turd

It's a bird! It's a plane!
But no, it's just my pain

Walking, running, hoarding
They're just too plain
Flying, diving, soaring
Is what eases the pain

College For All

The world I come from is violent, but the community is what makes our world’s connection strong. One word to describe the community is dedicated. The community is dedicated because even though the city is violent, the community refuses to back down. We still live in this community because we have a strong heart. An opportunity for me is this College For All trip!

A major issue confronting my family/school is being absent or tardy most of the time. The way I changed is that for the past months, I’ve never been absent! This effect would make high school a bit easier than if I were to be absent all the time. The reason I was absent or tardy all the time is because I kept waking up late from doing long nights of homework. The best solution is to be on contract with Ms. Bayard. The contract improved my attendance because of the change in my routines.

I know I have a long way to prepare for college, but I have the potential and the capability to maintain my education. I want to go to college because I want to support my family since I’ll be the first person to graduate college! By going to college, I could have a successful career in life. A program I’d like to be apart of would be a video arts program. This can help me in the future because I like to make videos and edit them myself.

Dia de Los Muertos Poem

Billy Mays

I haven't met you in person
But you've interrupted me so many
Of my favorite TV shows
For me to know you enough
I remember how you always used to say
"Bringing you guys the power of Oxi Clean!"
Although your product may have tinted my clothes
It still gave it the fresh out
The laundry detergent smell
You're always advertising your product
With your blue buttoned shirt
And appearing in front of everyone's
TV screen more than I can count
But you still can't top the ShamWow Commercial

RIP
Day of the Dead
